Out of the several hundred malls scattered across the United States, every so often there is a mall that just did everything right and is reaping the rewards from all of the hard work put in to establishing a successful mall. Lakeside Shopping Center in Louisiana is definitely one of those malls, and it really did just perform all the proper actions for any given situation.
First of all, the mall got a head start on a lot of its competitors by opening in 1960, right at the beginning of the enclosed shopping mall era. It was the very first regional shopping mall in New Orleans, and has gone through numerous different expansions, renovations, and anchor changes to get to where it is today as one of the highest grossing malls in all of the United States.
Lakeside Shopping Center is often referred to as Lakeside Center or even just Lakeside for a lot of its regular customers. Currently, the mall weighs in at a heavy 967,000 square feet, although this was after some expansion so the original size was a bit smaller. The mall itself is located dead center of the New Orleans Metropolitan area, making it an easily accessible location and very popular in the area.
Fat City; Prevailing through the oil bust
Due to Lakeside Shopping Centers high success, as well as the fact this area was accompanied by several nightclubs and fancy restaurants that shared similar prosperity, the entire area was dubbed the name Fat City. However, things were looking to get bumpy amidst the late 80’s when the oil industry would suffer a sharp decline and cause a decay of different businesses in the New Orleans area.
Although this looked sure to affect everyone nearby, Fat City continued to press onward and be successful despite the rocky road it was forced to travel upon. Perhaps luck has been on the side of Lakeside Shopping Center since the beginning and is sticking with it, this would seem to be the case, especially after the mall was able to avoid almost any damage from Hurricane Katrina.
Current State of Lakeside Shopping Center
With the economy struggling to get back on its feet, especially in the New Orleans area, it is amazing that Lakeside Shopping Center remains open today. However, it’s practically unbelievable that it continues to see such great success even in tough times, included very difficult times like those associated with Hurricane Katrina.
Lakeside Shopping Center may always be around, at least it certainly looks that way at this rate. It may always be a mystery as to how it was able to prevail through an economic depression in New Orleans, and even a major natural disaster that had a devastating blow on the country as a whole. Regardless, malls from all over the US have something to learn from Lakeside Shopping Center, except finding out what that secret is will be the tricky part.
